WS107. What is Accessible Emergency Information? Why is it Critical?

Attendees will gain a clear understanding of the barriers encountered by people with sensory disabilities when emergency information alerts are not provided in accessible formats. Real life examples will be provided, such as, the impact an accessible “Boil Water” alert had when a mother (Deaf) received the alert in ASL and learned not to use “un-boiled” tap water with the powder formula for her premature twins.  This session is not only about people who need access to emergency information using the modality that best accommodates their disability, but also about the proven solutions that are being used today to ensure the access and inclusion for people who are deaf, blind, low vision, deaf and blind, hard of hearing as well as individuals with literacy challenges.
